The medical specialty of psychiatry deals with the physical,
emotional and mental disorders that affect how
we think,
feel and behave. A
myriad of physical disorders (i.e.,
hypothyroidism, brain tumor, stroke) can result
in emotional disturbances. Severe psychosocial stress can
bring on a myriad of physical disorders (i.e., irritable bowel
syndrome, eczema, hypercholesterolemia, asthma, etc.). Hence,
a physician working in this specialty (a psychiatrist) has
received intensive medical training in order to separate the
physical causes of mental illness from the emotional causes.
He or she is capable of physical and mental diagnosis and of
being able to prescribe a treatment plan which could include
counseling, psychotherapy, medication and, if need be,
hospitalization. He or she is also responsible to ensure that
your physical state is not the cause of your current emotional
state.
