FORENSIC PSYCHIATRY

The word forensic comes from a Latin word that means forum or court of law.  The technique of using scientific methods in solving crimes is called forensic science.  A person who examines evidence in a crime laboratory is known as a forensic scientist or a criminalist.

Forensic science includes such specialties as forensic psychiatry, forensic toxicology, and forensic pathology.  A forensic psychiatrist examines persons suspected of a crime to determine if they are legally sane.
